The joys of Mt. Rainier aren’t relegated to just the National Park. They can be found in the surrounding communities as well. We wanted take a closer look at one such place – Elbe Junction. Located in the gateway community of Elbe, this quaint old-time grocery store is a step back in time. Stop in for an impressive selection of gourmet snacks and beverages, locally sourced artisan gifts, hand-scooped ice cream, premium espresso drinks, and an expertly brewed cup of Stumptown Coffee.
The DeWitt’s, owners of the store, are so passionate about their local history that they researched the original paint code the building was painted in the early 1900’s and had it recreated so they could paint the building the original color! In the summer months, don’t miss their selection of ice creams and their wonderful affogatos. For those of you who are wondering, an affogato is an Italian coffee-based dessert. It usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped or “drowned” with a shot of hot espresso.
Just across the road from Elbe Junction is the Mt. Rainier Railroad and the historic Little White Church. For more information on DeWitt’s Elbe Junction, you can visit the Elbe Junction Facebook page.
